John has been a resident of the Youngstown area his entire life. He was born on June 21, 1945 on the city's  east side where he was raised until the age of 13. His family moved to Struthers, Ohio where he graduated from Struthers High School in 1963. After graduation John worked full-time and attended Youngstown University full-time, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. During his tour, he spent 16 months overseas in South Korea and was Honorably Discharged in 1967.  He then returned to the states where he continued his education at YSU. In 1969, John was appointed to the Youngstown Fire Department, serving until his retirement in 1995. When he retired he had attained the rank of Captain

In 1973, John received a Technical Degree in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning from A.T.E.S. Technical School and in 1974 he started a business named R&S Appliance Service, which he owned until closing it in 2000. After retiring from the fire department, John ran for and won the seat of 7th Ward Council Member in the city. In 1999 he was re-elected to this post and then in 2002 appointed as the President of Council. Currently he has returned to serve as the 7th Ward  Council member as of 1-1-2008
